NATURAL GAS DRILLING PRACTICE IN WELL SHAN-242

  • Pure natural gas is used for the successful drilling of well Shan-242 in Changqing Oilfield. The footage achieved is 157m, with an average ROP of 11.77m/h, and the gas volume is 7×104m3. Hole stability of gas drilling, composite evaluation of formation fluid, gas injection during drilling, and well control technology, as well as other related technologies are discussed. It concludes that hole stability can be achieved in dry gas drilling, and for the 157m long interval, the water production is 0.5m3/h, which is suitable for natural gas drilling. Underbalanced drilling procedures are strictly followed during natural gas drilling, which ensures a smooth operation. This well set a record of using natural gas for oil well drilling in China.
